Link Layer Discovery Protocol-Media Endpoint Discovery (LLDP-MED) is an extension to LLDP that enables endpoints that support LLDP-MED, usually IP phones and video-capable devices, to obtain information from an adjacent LLDP device, usually a switch, and use that information for autoconfiguration purposes.
For example, a switch can use LLDP-MED type-length-values (TLV) to advertise the QoS markings and VLAN that connected IP phones should use for voice and signaling traffic. IP phones can then apply such settings automatically, thus making network deployment easier. In addition, a switch can also use the additional LLDP-MED TLVs sent by endpoints to collect detailed information about connected devices for inventory management purposes.
