RSPAN is an enhanced version of SPAN. Like SPAN, it enables you to mirror traffic on one or more ports to the specified destination interface. However, unlike SPAN, RSPAN tags the mirrored traffic with a VLAN that you choose and then floods the traffic in the VLAN across multiple switches. The result is that all devices in the VLAN receive a copy of the mirrored traffic. For this reason, to prevent network saturation caused by the mirrored traffic, it is a best practice to use a dedicated VLAN for RSPAN, and to assign to the VLAN to the monitoring devices only.
